Golf
In a country whose greatest claim to fame is its variety of championship links courses, Carnoustie reigns supreme. The Championship course offers some of the most challenging and stimulating golf anywhere in the world. As befits Carnoustie's distinguished status in offering world class golfing facilities.
Due to its central location, guests staying at Carnoustie are a mere hour away from the Old Course at St Andrews and Kingsbarns. In addition to these courses there are also over 200 courses within a 2 hour drive of Carnoustie, including Gleneagles, Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay, Edzell, Rosemount, Montrose, Monifieth and Panmure Barry, several of which are Open Championship qualifying courses. Muirfield, venue of the 2002 Open Championship, is 1˝ hours from Carnoustie.
In The Footsteps of Champions - The game of golf has been played at Carnoustie since before Columbus discovered America, making it one of the oldest courses in the world. The links have been played over the years by all the golfing greats and have acquired a deserved reputation as a demanding test of golfing ability.
Around the turn of the 20th century some 270 sons of Carnoustie left their native land and travelled the world, teaching and playing the game of golf. Their successes were unparalleled, and by 1926 their names were inscribed on the national Open trophies of seven different countries, including Britain and America. Many of those names now hold revered places in the history of the game. The Smith Brothers travelled to America where first Willie then Alex both won the United States Open. A third brother, MacDonald, however, led to the name of Mac Smith becoming the most famous of Carnoustie brothers. Stewart Maiden, a native of Carnoustie, became famous, not through his own playing achievements, but through the successes of one of his pupils - the legendary Bobby Jones. Jones received his early teaching from Maiden, before going on to compile a record that sets him apart as one of the greatest golfers who ever lived.
